Signs You Have a Pipe Leak

flooded-interiorIt can be difficult to know when your pipe system is experiencing issues, especially since so much of the average system is hidden from view. This is especially problematic for leaks, which often don’t display easily detectable warning symptoms. This can be quite a problem, as undetected pipe leaks will often cause all kinds of water damage if they are left alone. If you know what to look for, though, you can possibly identify leaks in your pipe system before they cause too much damage. Have a look at the following signs that you have a leak.

Dropping Water Pressure

Declining water pressure is never a good sign when it comes to your pipe system. If you are experiencing a steady drop in water pressure, you might have a leak somewhere in your pipes that is in the process of getting worse. If the drop in water pressure is sudden, then you may have a larger pipe leak or rupture that needs to be dealt with as quickly as possible. A water pressure drop located in one section of the home will often give a rough indication of where the leak is located. A loss of water pressure throughout the house will often indicate an issue with the water line. Regardless, you should call for repairs as soon as you notice this sign.

Higher Water Bills

You should always keep an eye on your water bills, just in case they indicate a problem with your pipe system. For example, if your water bill is steadily rising from month to month, but you aren’t using that much extra water to your knowledge, it might mean that you have a leak somewhere in the system. If you notice that your bills are higher than they should be, it might not be a bad idea to have a professional pipe technician examine your system to make sure that it’s working properly.

Check the Water Meter

One of the easiest ways to tell if you have a leak is to turn off all water appliances in your home, and then have a look at the water meter. If the meter is still running, then it means you still have water leaving the system. That most likely means that you still have a leak somewhere, and that you should have a professional examine the system as soon as possible.

Water Damage

It’s not an ideal situation, but one of the easiest ways to tell if your pipe system is experiencing a leak is to look for water damage on your walls, floors, or ceilings. If you do happen to catch a spot in your home that looks like it’s experiencing water damage, it’s best that you have the area examined by a professional as soon as possible. You may not be able to prevent all of the damage, but at least with quick reactions you can prevent further problems.
