Leaking in Seattle

The Seattle Parks Department is responsible for the maintenance of public pools and has been conducting water loss tests on all of their facilities. The testing will be part of a federal green program on water conservation. The South West Seattle pool location was the first to be tested and was losing water through its drain and recycling system. Before the Seattle Parks Department started testing, the 30 + year old South West Seattle pool system was thought to be losing water. The South West Seattle pool is Olympic size with a 12ft deep diving area. The cause of water loss was found to be more than evaporation and additional studies were conducted.

The Seattle Parks Department had the drain system video inspected but only found a crack in the 8” PVC pipe just before a fitting. The location of the crack was approximately 15ft deep under the concrete deck. Excavation in a building, 15ft deep held no guarantee that this was the only issue. The process would have been difficult and expensive. Time was also a consideration since the pool was not in service. The community was getting upset and the pool was losing money due to loss of revenue. Several plumbing companies were called to inspect and analyze the problem. None of the plumbing companies were able to take on the suspected problem without excavation.

The Superintendent of the Seattle Parks Department began looking on the web and found our site (www.insta-pipe.com) and contacted us. Our company visited the pool and watched the video. When our company informed the Seattle Parks Department that a liner could be installed to rehab the leaking PVC, the room lit up with smiling faces. With the approval of the Seattle Parks Department, we ordered a custom length 6x8 transitional flex liner. The flex liner was selected by our company to get around the three 8” short turn 90 degree fittings in the system. The drain line in the pump room was cut out where it comes through the floor on its vertical run up. This process allowed the liner to be manually held in place to ensure it did not sag until the calibration tube was installed. After the install was completed our company let the liner cure overnight so that it was good and hard for the lateral reinstatements. Two other sump drains in the floor of the pool needed to be reinstated. The Seattle Parks Department is extremely happy with the product and service provided by Insta-Pipe and Perma-Liner. In the midst of writing this story, Insta-Pipe and Perma-Liner received approval to rehab another pool for the Seattle Parks Department.

“I teamed with Perma-LinerTM 6 years ago after years of trying other lining products without success. Armed with Perma-Liner’sTM knowledge, training and support we have grown from one lateral system to two Turn-Key Lateral Trailers, one InnerSealTM Trailer and one Sectional Point RepairTM System. Perma-LinerTM Industries is the only solution we’ll use for our CIPP projects.”
